Mural in the Italian restaurant Vesuvios in Salem, MA. It is a view of the bay and the surrounding towns and villages of the volcano and the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii in western Italy. The city was buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in ad 79; excavations of the site began in 1748 and revealed well-preserved remains of buildings, mosaics, furniture, and the personal possessions of the city's inhabitants. Portraits of the owners of the restaurant make a picture of individual and entertain regular customers of the restaurant.
