These murals require a very skillful artist, for most of us are familiar with the true old masters paintings, and can detect a poorly rendered work. The true old masters style might have used an underpainting first (a one-color rendering of the piece first), then layers of translucent colors are applied on top. Modern mural painters would manage to make the painting look old without necessarily going through this step. Excellent drawing is also key in an Old Masters style mural. A formal dining room or living room is a fitting setting for such a mural, as well as a commercial space, such as department store, restaurant.
