One of the downtown Detroit building restoration projects funded by the National Trust for Historic Places is the Iodent Building, an 8 story former toothpaste factory converted to upscale apartments. Key to the funding is the historically accurate reconstruction of the art deco inspired sunburst pattern on the ceiling of the first floor lobby. From the only existing color photo of the ceiling in a dilapidated state, digital imagery allowed for the creation of custom cut stencils for the gold outlines running throughout the design. Approvals had to be met by the general contractor, historic architect, building owner, and the Michigan Historic Commission.
