Mathew's Wide World of Sports

Style: Children's Murals

The 9- year old boy was clear on his room make- over when I sat down with him. He wanted sports on one wall, Disney characters on another wall, cars on the third wall, and a blank wall for his plethora of posters and signs. As an artist, this is one of those times one must step up to the plate (in this case quite literally) and suggest a compromise. For the sake of my professional integrity, and his visitors' eyeballs, I suggested we depict his "disney" characters driving in "cars" to a "sports event". The road is based with both magnetic and chalkboard paint, and winds throughout the room, along the way passing a "famous castle", a baseball stadium with full 3-D action in play, and detours briefly through a "study area" as a straight border. In this area he hung his posters and also uses his "wall" as a chalkboard for homework and reminders. Finally, the road ends up at a golf course where the Matt Club is known as the 19th hole. Other fun elements included the use of his "signs" as road markets, and used cut car-print material to create our own traffic by cutting out the cars and gluing magnets to the back. He can reposition them around his walls when he wants them to actually arrive somewhere!
